CHAPTER ONE: AMY AND ELANA MEET MILLY THE STORY FAIRY
Amy and Elana are playing a very secret game. When Mummy walks past Elana's pretty pink bedroom they put their fingers to their lips. Elana goes, 'Shh! We can't tell her what we are doing.'
Amy giggles and puts her finger to her lips, 'Shh!'
Mummy grins, 'Get ready for a visitor girls. Milly has asked me if she can borrow you for an adventure.'
There is a flash of rainbow light and a pretty little fairy appears in front of them. She is wearing a new green and blue dress. It shimmers like her wings. The dress twinkles when the sun shines on it, reminding the girls of the sea on a hot day.
'Hello, Milly.' Elana smiles, 'Nice to see you again. Do you want to play our very special, amazing, secret game?'
'No thank you, ladies. Storyland has a perplexing problem. We know how smart you both are and we need your help. Your Mummy says you can come. Would you like to?'
The girls sit closer together, 'Yes, Milly. We are ready.'
Milly plays around up her pretty new skirt that looks like the sea. She pulls a face then she takes out her, her extra special, super-duper, brilliant, amazing, triple sparkly, bright-pink with bells, whistles and a shining star wand. She waves it and the girls are transformed. Elana is wearing a hot pink dress with sequins and Amy's is yellow with sparkles. 'Right close your eyes. Today you are going to find Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who is missing from the middle.'
Milly waves her wand again. Milly, Amy and Elana all shout, 'STORY-FY.'
CHAPTER TWO: STORYLAND
WHEEEE!!!!' Amy and Elana are hurtling down the curly, wurly, hurly, burly, really, really, really, long helter-skelter slide inside a tree. Down! Down! Down! They are going so fast it makes their ears pop. Finally they hit the big pile of cushions at the bottom of the tree.
They stand up and smooth down their pretty new dresses and look around. The girls breath in. A beautiful perfume is coming from the special Storyland meadow, which is on the otherside of the nearby fence with a stile to get over it. The flowers are beautiful in a rainbow of colours, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The girls look around. Elana looks at Amy, 'Someone usually meets us here. They show us where we are going.'
There is a small breeze and the sun goes dark as a huge shadow covers it from view. The girls look up. A great, big white swan swoops down, and lands in front of them. His kind blue eyes twinkle and he smiles, because swans in Storyland can have blue eyes, smile and talk. 'Hello ladies. This is a very special and important mission. You are here to find Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who is missing from the Middle.' He nudges Elana gently, 'You look beautiful, Elana it is lovely to see you again.' Then he turns to Amy, 'I am the Great White Swan of the East, but you may call me Cobb.'
The girls curtsey, because the Great White Swan of the East is almost the most important being in Storyland. 'Thank you Cobb,' they say.
He leans down and picks Elana up gently in his beak. He lifts her round places her on a pretty gold chair nestled into a special space on his large snow-white back. He gathers Amy up next. 'Now ladies you are in my special place. Stay safe as I take you to the centre of Storyland, so you can fine Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who is missing from the middle.' He runs fast, his feet looking like they are pedalling hard. He steps over the stile. Mile after mile they travel in style as Cobb continues his take off run. Smoke begins to trail out from his rear, and he takes off into the air. His wings are flapping so fast that Amy and Elana can barely see them. He shouts back, 'It can be a little choppy to start with. Sick bags under your seats, please try not to throw-up on my feathers, because it isn't pleasant for me to clean.'
They pick up speed. Faster! Faster! Faster! They fly over rainbow fields, some are red, some are orange, some are yellow, some are green, some are blue, some are indigo and some are violet. The colours whirl past. They fly over a white sparkly beach that twinkles like diamonds in the sun. Faster! Faster! Faster! Over the green and blue sea that looks like Milly's dress. As the wind picks up the girls shiver and rub their arms. Cobb looks back and shouts, 'Cardigans under seats, I don't know what Milly was thinking sending you in those flimsy clothes.'
The girls pull a face as they cover up their pretty dresses with dingy brown cardigans. 'Hope you like them, my wife knitted them specially.'
Because Amy and Elana are polite little girls they smile and nod, 'They are lovely and warm, Cobb.'
CHAPTER THREE: MAUVE THE MYSTICAL MERMAID'S ISLAND
Right up ahead is an island. With white sparkling sand and palm trees. There is a causeway leading to a pretty landing stage. 'Hold onto your ears girls. We are going in to land.' Cobb banks round and lands in the sea. 'We are here this is where Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who is missing from the middle lives. This island is the very centre of Storyland. It is where people come to seek her sage advice. She hasn't been seen since the ides of March and we are very worried.'
Elana sucks her lip and concentrates, 'So Mauve the Mystical Mermaid has been missing from the middle since March.' She wipes her brow, 'Phew that is hard to say. You haven't seen her all through April?'
'It is even worse than that.' Cobb looks sad, 'Mauve the Mystical Mermaid has been missing from the middle since the middle of March. The ides of March is the fifteenth of the month. Milly sent you to solve the mystery.'
'I see. Where on the island does she live?' Amy asks as Cobb lifts her down and places her on the magical glimmering land stage with crystal arches. She smooths down her dress and unbuttons her cardigan.
'She lives in a cave on Twinkle-Pinkle-Winkle Beach.' He points at a-dark hole in a cliff. Then he lifts down Ellie in her pretty pink dress and ugly brown cardigan. He stands her next to Amy. 'You must look for clues to see what has happened to Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who has gone missing from the middle
Chapter Four
The girls are walking along glistening beach and remove their cardigans tying them round their waist it it hot work. 'Mauve the Mystical Mermaid, where are you? Come out, come out wherever you are.' They shout loudly. They walk over to the rocks, now rocks in storyland aren't plain grey, green, brown like they are on Earth they are a bright rainbow of colours, there are red ones, orange ones, yellow ones, green ones, blue ones, indigo ones, and violet ones – and all the colours in between, They make the white sand look even brighter. The girls stop. Did that mauve coloured rock yawn?
'Please, pipe down I am trying to sleep.'
The girls jump as one of the rocks grows a head and begins to move towards them very, very slowly. Elana smiles and drops to her knees, 'My name is Elana and this is Amy, who are you?'
` He sniffs, 'I am Sleepy Tubal the Sea Turtle.' He yawns, 'I was taking a nap. What are you doing here?'
'Milly the Story Fairy and Cobb, the Great Swan of the East, sent us to help fine Mauve, the MysticalMermaid, who has been missing from the middle since March the fifteenth.' Amy says as she gets used to the huge creature.
'M … Milly is ... is m … missing. She can't be we talked and played. Then she went to play with Camilla the Colour Changing Chameleon.' He yawns, 'Was it really the middle of march when I last saw Mauve the Mystical Mermaid?' He sniffs again, 'Maybe it was I am so old that time just flies by. Just not enough hours to sleep.'
'Where did you last see them?' Elana asks him.
'On Tinkle-Winkle-Pinkle beach, they were playing over there by Winkle rock. Maybe Willy the Winking Winkle can help, he'll be on a rock over there someplace.' He points to a rock on the edge of a palm and banana tree forest.'
Elana kisses his nose, 'Thank you for your help to find Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who is missing from the middle.'
He stretches and yawns yet again and his head disappears back inside his shell.
Chapter Five
The girls walk over to a different set of bright coloured rocks set against the raspberry ripple cliffs. They can't see anything, 'Hello we are looking for Willy Winkle?'
'Why?' A tiny voice squeaks, 'How do I know your not a Willy Winkle picker?'
Elana rolls her eyes, 'Milly has sent us to fine Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who has been missing from the middle since the ides of March.' She points at Cobb who has his head buried under his wings and is letting out a snore that is shaking the ground slightly, 'See The Great White Swan brought us.'
'I am Willy the Winking Winkle.'
'Where are you?' Amy asks scanning the rocks.
'Near the bottom of the orange rock with yellow stripes to your left.'
The girls kneel down, they still can't see anything. 'Can you help us find Mauve the Mystical Mermaid?'
'I last saw her playing the Banarama Balmy Palm Tree Forest with Camilla the Colour Changing Cameleon,'
'What were they playing?' Elana asks still trying to find Willy. Suddenly there is a bright flash of light from the orange and yellow rock.
'Oops sorry that is my winking light. They said their game was hush, hush secret. I'm sure you will find them. Milly sent you because she knew you could find Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who is missing from the middle.'
'Thank you for helping us Willy the Winking Winkle. Your light is very pretty.'
'You ain't seen nothing yet. Come on guys and gals.' He squeaks. The rocks all start twinkling as all the special storyland winkles light up.
Chapter Six
Elana and Amy head for the Bananarama Balmy Palm Tree forest. It is very cold and very dark. They shiver and look at each other, 'Guess we had better put the cardigans on.' Elana says.
'Argh!!' Amy shrieks.
'What's wrong?' Elana looks round and shouts even louder, 'Help.'
The big yellow and red spider shrieks and runs further up the tree, 'Oh no, People. People are so scary. Mummy, I want my mummy. Help save me. I don't want to be squished.'
Elana looks up at the frightened spider, 'I'm sorry, we didn't mean to scare you it was very bad mannered.' She points to Amy, 'This is Amy and my name is Elana. Nice to meet you. I promise not to squish you. We need your help.'
He spins a beautiful golden strand and uses it to abseil down to them, 'You promise not to squish me?'
'We promise.' The girls say. Using the Brownie girl guide salute.
'I am Barnabas the Banana Spider. I am special kind of banana spider called a nephila clavipes or golden orb-weaver. On Earth where you are from spiders like me can hurt you a bit but we can't kill you. Storyland spiders won't hurt you as long as you don't try to squish us.' He takes a big breath and says, 'You can call me Barney.'
'Nice to meet you Barney and we won't hurt you.' Amy says stroking his hairy brightly coloured legs.
Elana says, 'We need your help, we were sent by Milly the story fairy to find Mauve the Mystical Mermaidwho is missing from the middle. Willy the Winking Winkle said she came in the forest. Have you seen her?'
He nods and points, 'She was playing her secret game with Camila the Colour Changing Chameleon. Down that path – I think she was learning to colour change.' He climbs on Elana's shoulder, 'I'll come and help you.'
Chapter Seven
They wander further and further down the path. Elana, Amy and Barney are shouting, 'Mauve and Camilla where are you?'
As they reach a very dark green spot they here a loud shout. 'Help, Help, Help.'
They look around and can't see anything. Then on a brown rock they see a chameleon begin to take on the rainbow colours, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. She looks at them, 'Oh help, please help. We have been here forever. We were practising colour changing and Mauve did really well. She turned the same colour as the forest floor. But then a host of centaurs came through and kicked her all the way up there.' Camilla the Colour Changing Chameleon points up to the top of a very, very, very tall bananarama palm tree.
Amy, Elana and Barney look up. All the way up. That is right at the very top, they see a tiny speck of purple. 'I .. is that Mauve?' Amy asks nervously.
Camilla nods, 'I can't get her down she is so frightened. She may have to stay there forever. Good job mermaids in Storyland don't need water to survive. She has managed with drinking dew and eating bananas, and has made a little house at the top.
Amy looks at Elana, 'What do we do?'
Barney leaves Elana's shoulder, 'Leave this to me, I can get her down.' He scampers all the way up. Further, further, further he climbs. He reaches the purple dot at the top and together they abseil down the tree.
'Wow are we glad to see you, I am Amy and this is Elana.' Amy says, 'We have been looking for Mauve the Mystical Mermaid.'
'Thank you girls you have found her. People don't come through here very often. Nobody came to help and Camilla didn't want to leave us. I want to go home.'
Elana picks up the tiny mermaid and puts her on the right shoulder. Barney sits on her left and Camilla sits on Amy's shoulder. Together they run as fast as they can back to the beach.
'Hello Mauve and Camilla.' The twinkling winkles shout.
'Oh good to see you Mauve and Camilla,' Sleepy Tubal calls.
Elana and Amy put everyone down in front of Cobb, The Great White Swan of the East. 'He nudges Mauve and Camilla with his beak. 'It is good to have you safe ladies we have been worried. Next time you play a game like that tell someone where you are going.'
Mauve and Camilla start to cry, 'We are very sorry, Cobb. We won't do it again.'
'This next week you will not leave Mauve's cave and garden.' He turns to Barney, 'Your Mummy is worried you had better go home. Thank you for being so brave.'
'Thank you, Cobb.' Barney scampers back towards the Bananrama Balmy Palm Forest.
'Girls I know you want time to play but it is time to get you back home. You have helped us out again and found Mauve the Mystical Mermaid who has been missing from the middle since the middle of March. Say goodbye to everyone,' Cobb picks them up and places them on the chairs on his back. They fly back over the ocean, back over the rainbow fields. He drops them off at the tree.
'Lovely cardigans, girls.' Milly smiles. She plays around up her skirt. She pulls a face and takes out her her extra special, super-duper, brilliant, amazing, triple sparkly, bright-pink with bells, whistles and a shining star wand. 'OK, are you ready?'
'We're ready, Milly,' Amy and Elana say as they stand close together.
Milly waves her wand and they all shout, 'Homie-Fy.'
Elana and Amy are back in Elana's pretty pink bedroom wearing their normal clothes. Elana looks at Amy, 'Shall we have a game of dominoes, maybe Mummy could play with us.'
Amy and Elana are playing a very secret game. When Mummy walks past Elana's pretty pink bedroom they put their fingers to their lips. Elana goes, 'Shh! We can't tell her what we are doing.'
