In 1703 the death of his favourite daughter sends Sir Robert Gordon, 3rd Baronet of Gordonstoun, down into his basement and deeper into his studies of alchemy. The flashes and bangs coming from the big house are rattling the locals who already nickname him the Wizard of Gordonstoun.
Shortly after the local whore Margaret Frigg dies in suspicious circumstances leaving her only surviving child Robina to fend for herself. Margaret has always contented that Robina is the laird daughter. The unusual teen has survived through blackmail and stealing. She can read, write and has learned of the dark arts from a mysterious group of travelling players that visit every summer.
Shortly after Margaret’s death Robina in her raven form rescues Sir Robert after he tried a to cross the frozen Spynie Loch in his carriage. Despite his wife’s protests he takes her into his home. He soon discovers she can match his intelligence They work together on his experiements using her unique talents. The noises, flashes and bangs coming from the laird’s house freak out the local population who become increasingly irate.
Robina discovers that Dame Elizabeth is having an affair with the parson of Duffus. It casts doubt on the paternity of his other two children and leaves him believing Robina is his only surviving child.
Robina, her newly acquired friend and his best friend John McKean come up with a plan to make their escape. They inact the plan where John “dies” in June, Robert’s family think he died in September. He puts bricks in the coffin. When he returns in November he is spotted. He rides out to Birnie before making is final escape.
