Synopsis
Blood, mayhem and magic forge a reluctant prince into a beloved king.
A night of royal disasters thrust the unprepared Prince Angus of Covesea Island onto the throne. As the youngest of three children he never expected to inherit. The modern teen has no respect for royal tradition and would rather hang out with his mates or start a brawl. He has never left the Royal Quarter, never shown any interest in affairs of state, the press call him “The Royal Oaf” and focus groups report he is public enemy number one. Oh and his sister wants him dead.
During his reign Angus’ grandfather attempted to eradicate all references to magic, history and religion. The country was taught that knowledge of those subjects would rot their brain and they would be led back to the country’s barbarous past if they indulged in such study. Except for banned works of classical literature, passed round school along with porn magazines, Angus has never been exposed to life outside of his heavily controlled, pampered royal existence.
His much older sister, Princess Evelyn, has only ever wanted one thing: to be queen. Evie will stop at nothing to get her crown; her CV includes matricide, patricide and attempted fratricide. Unlike Angus she has the people’s hearts and the media adore her. With a mix of sex and blackmail she has assured support from the country’s military leaders. She has hated Angus since he was in the womb and now he has blundered onto her coveted throne.
Outgunned, outmanoeuvred and out of his depth, Angus joins forces with the senile, bright-pink mobile-phone wielding Abbot Alexander Kazuto of the Order of the Sea. After one of his brethren is beheaded by Angus’ grandfather the Abbot cloistered his brethren to protect them. He hopes Angus’ reign will end the Order’s self-imposed exile. To buy time the Abbot asks his illicit lover, Angus' father's identical twin, to keep the old king "alive".
Angus goes to live at the Order of the Sea for a period of training. By showing him the traditional religion and magic (yang-qi) of the island the Abbot gives Angus the resources to become a greater king than his corrupt grandfather and weak father. The study of religion and history has been a capital offence and it will take all of Angus’ intelligence and strength to convince his people that he is not leading them back to a barbaric past.
Under the Abbot’s guidance Angus excels at the fighting and meditation arts. Using the genius intelligence he has inherited from his father and the science they studied together Angus is able to take the training he has received from the Abbot to a level never seen before.
In order to take control of the corrupt Queen’s Guard that had blighted his father’s reign Angus needs a wife. The Abbot’s daughter, Beatrice, bullies him into marrying her. They form a close bond which over time develops into a deep love and respect.
The renegade Queen’s Guard is under the command of Princess Evelyn and the malevolent General Ignatio Luis. Together they plotted the assassination of Angus’ father. Evelyn has promised the general greater power when she takes over the throne.
Beatrice and the Abbot lead a bloody but successful takeover of the guard. During the raid they capture the general. He is put on trial and awarded the death penalty; Angus is horrified to discover, the king is required to carry out the deed. General Luis’s last words confirm that Princess Evelyn shot their father. Her marriage to the President of Ceylonica makes her untouchable.
An ancient law prohibits the king from entering the Queen’s Guard base and Angus is initially left behind at the deserted Order of the Sea. Beneath the Order, he discovers an even older sanctuary temple with a weird incumbent who shows Angus how to turn into Mayhem, The Great White Falcon. He becomes the first monarch in centuries to become the iconic symbol and uses the bird to provide Beatrice with vital air support as she battles the general.
Exposed for the scheming bitch she is, Evelyn flees the country spitting blood, feathers and revenge.
Angus refuses a trade agreement which places the tiny island on the eve of an all-out war with Ceylonica. Desperate to avoid a battle he cannot win he makes a decision that will test all his principles; he orders the kidnap of the President of Ceylonica and Evelyn’s small daughter. The president regrets his marriage. He believes that his daughter is in danger from her mother. In exchange for Angus ensuring her safety the President signs a peace treaty.
The media that once called him “The Royal Oaf’’ have renamed him “Angus the Great’’ as he ushers in a new era of peace. With Ceylonica neutralised he can negotiate new trade agreements which bring increased prosperity to the island. Focus groups say the people are enjoying life more under the new king.
King Angus and Queen Beatrice are crowned in a glorious ceremony but it is marred by an Evelyn sponsored assassination attempt. The assassin is caught and they continue with the celebrations. `
